‘365’ – One film, One Year, One Second a day

// News

It’s safe to say that, during a busy year for animation, one of the busiest in the business this year have been the Brothers McLeod. Since the 1st January this year the brothers have animated a single second for the film every day, with each unique from the one before it. Creating a second of animation every day on top of other work commitments sounds difficult enough but with every second being from scratch there are hundreds of character designs, backgrounds and ideas that had to be conjured up every day.

The brothers got in touch to let us know a bit more about the project and how you can find out more below.

It’s all nearly over – the film which Greg has been animating all year, a second a day, draws to it’s conclusion on the 31st December. Over 1000 hours of work culminating in a 7 minute film which reperesents a whole years worth of visual diary entries.

365 is an improvised film made up of a second a day of animation which will continuing through 2013 culminating in a film which will chart the comings and goings of the year, real and imagined.

Using the everyday as inspiration to create an abstract, disconnected stream of consciousness which allows the viewer to find connections to create narratives and to find hidden meanings which may or may not be there.

Something during the day will catch my eye or it will be something I’ve read or overheard. It may be my children who spark an idea or it may be a dream I’ve had. It may be an interesting building. A painting or image from a book or magazine may provide the source material. It may be a sound that informs the visuals.

From day to day the new animation is unknown to me until that moment of inspiration strikes. The seconds when joined together can appear disconnected or form small narratives. Each section is a mini story in itself. A part of a narrative we never see. We only glimpse but a second of it, the rest of the story continuing in another unmade animation.

365 is a visual self portrait of my year. Passing of time, changing locations and emotional states and flights of improvised imaginings all going towards the final product, a 7 minute film, to overwhelm, to delight in, to laugh at and to baffle in equal measure.
