The 86th Academy Award Nominations Revealed

// News

The glitz! The glamour! The clink of champagne glasses and the glare of photographers bulbs as superstars from the world of film make their way down the red carpet. Of course it is the Oscars and somewhere amongst all of this nonsense you’ll find the short and feature animation directors and special effects artists there to receive their own accolades from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences for their achievements in the past year or so. Here at Skwigly we will be taking a look from the Animation perspective (what else?) at these awards.

Last year Pixar’s Brave won the Best Animated Feature award with John Kahrs from Disney winning Best Animated Short with Paperman. The Best visual effects award went to Life of Pi grabbing headlines as protestors took to the red carpet adding to the ongoing VFX debate.

This year nominations for Best Animated Feature go to The Croods, Despicable Me 2, Ernest and Celestine, Frozen and The Wind Rises. Feral, Get a Horse!, Mr. Hublot, Possessions and Room on the Broom are nominated for Best Animated Short. The award for Visual Effects could go to either Gravity, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Iron Man 3, The Lone Ranger or Star Trek Into Darkness.

Over the past few months the readers of Skwigly have been adding to our online poll in their droves with Feral the favourite to take away the short award and Monsters Uni pitched to take away best feature, however with Monsters uni not even getting a nomination you need not be reminded that the Academy Awards are not voted for solely by animators so expect the unexpected.

You can of course let us know what the animation community thinks of the award nominations by getting in touch with us in our poll or the comments below, on Twitter, Facebook or by voicing your opinion on the Skwigly Animation Chatroom which is open Tuesdays from 9pm GMT

Ellen “Dory” Degeneres will present the awards on the 2nd March 2014 from the Dolby theatre.
