Animated Encounters launch their 2011 programme

// News

This week saw the launch of the official programme for Bristol Encounters, one of the UK’s most highly regarded international film festivals. Since last year it has separated its animated content to Animated Encounters, which will be returning to Bristol’s Arnolfini arts and culture centre from November 16th-20th. The programme launch was celebrated at the Roxy in London where filmmakers and festival participants were invited to see some of the work being showcased.

The evening began with Aardman co-founder and festival chairman David Sproxton introducing this year’s “bigger and stronger” edition of the festival as “weaning away from parental support, although that’s always welcome”. The fest’s animation programmer Kieran Argo then detailed some of the events on offer, including a children’s modelmaking workshop held by Aardman, special focus programs on animation from Brazil and Ireland as well as guest presentations and retrospectives such as Shelley Page of Dreamworks, Tomm Moore of Cartoon Saloon, Philip Hunt of Studio AKA and – in a spectacular coup – Canadian animation legend John Kricfalusi.

The shorts presented gave an encouraging glimpse into the level of filmmaking quality to expect, with animated work such as the meticulously crafted time-lapse in minitature “Hurdy Gurdy” (Seideneder/Pfeiffer) and the warmhearted, Méliès-meets-Švankmajer pixilation piece “Luminaris” (Juan Pablo Zaramella).

Amongst the other films included are works by Grant OrchardRichard PhelanJulia PottLouis Hudson,Francesca AdamsJessica AshmanSam Morrison as well as festival staples such as “The External World”(David O’Reilly) and “The Eagleman Stag” (Mikey Please).
