Discover the 2016 Cartoon d’Or and Cartoon Tributes Nominees

The French city of Toulouse will host the 27th edition of Cartoon Forum, the co-production platform for European animation series from 13-16 September. 80 new projects from accross Europe will be pitched. This is a record year for Cartoon Forum which goes from strength to strength. This year 22 countries will be presenting their projects to participants from 38 countries which include 950 producers, investors, distributors, buyers, SVoD platforms such as Netflix, Hopster TV, Toon Goggles.

Along with the presentation of projects, this key event for the European animation sector will host the ceremony for the Cartoon d’Or, the pan-European award for best animation short and the 3 Cartoon Tributes, which are professional awards for the most positive and influential broadcaster, investor/distributor and producer of the year. The Award Ceremony will take place on Thursday 15 September at 20:00 in Toulouse.

The five films nominated for Cartoon d’Or 2016

The Cartoon d’Or rewards the best of the best European animated short films since only prize-winning films can enter the competition. The five nominees for the Cartoon d’Or 2016 are:

  • Alike by Daniel Martínez Lara & Rafa Cano Méndez, Spain, 8’01, prod: Daniel Martinez Lara & La Fiesta P.C.
  • Machine by Sunit Parekh, Denmark, 19’03, prod: Sunit Parekh
  • Peripheria by David Coquard-Dassault, France, 12’20, prod: Autour de Minuit & Schmuby Productions
  • Under your fingers by Marie-Christine Courtès, France, 12’54, prod: Vivement Lundi ! & Novanima
  • Yùl and the Snake by Gabriel Harel, France, 13’11, prod: Kazak Productions

The jury was composed of Producer Clément Calvet (Superprod, France), Director Mark Burton (Aardman Animations, United Kingdom) and Director Alessandro Rak (MAD Entertainment, Italy). Out of the 23 short films which were selected by our partner festivals, the jury nominated 5 to compete for this year’s Cartoon d’Or.

The Award Ceremony will start with the screening of the nominated films in front of all animation professionals attending Cartoon Forum. The winner will be announced and will receive a 10,000 EUR grant, thanks to the support of Creative Europe – MEDIA. The aim of the Cartoon d’Or is to promote European animation Directors and offer them the opportunity to meet the industry at the Cartoon Forum. The Cartoon d’Or evening is sponsored by Occitanie / Pyrénées-Méditerranée Region.

PRODUCER OF THE YEAR

  • Autour de Minuit (France)
  • Creative Conspiracy (Belgium)

  • Framestore (United Kingdom)

The aim of the Cartoon Tributes is to reward outstanding achievements, companies or personalities that have had a positive and dynamic influence on the TV animation industry over the past year. A total of 15 companies and personalities are among the nominees for these awards, British and French companies coming up most, with 4 nominations for the UK and 5 for France.

For the UK:

  • Nickelodeon International (for 8-16 years olds) rounds up the list of nominees for Broadcaster of the Year;
  • Cake Entertainment (“Angry Birds Toons”, “Ella Bella Bingo”, “My Knight and Me”, “Ready Jet Go! “, …) and Penguin Random House (“Peter Rabbit”, “Vintage Ladybird”, “The Snowman”, “Puffin Rock”, etc.) will compete for Investor/Distributor of the Year;
  • Framestore (“Iggy and the Missing Links”, “Loopy Fruit” – Cartoon Forum 2016, …) for Producer of the Year.

For France:

  • M6 (for 4-10 years olds) is vying for Broadcaster of the Year;
  • francetv distribution (“Rabbids Invasion”, “Peanuts”,  “The Owl & Co”, “Dimitri” – released in 2014 in France and Award for the best animated series for children, International Festival of the Ottawa Animation Film 2014, …)  and NeweN Distribution(“Loopdidoo”, “Kaeloo”, “Magic Planet”, “UFO”, “Little Chicks”, etc.) will compete for Investor/Distributor of the Year;
  • Cyber Group Studios (“Gigantosaurus”, “Enchanted Sisters”, ” Zorro, the Chronicless”, “Zou”, “Mirette Investigates”, …) and Autour de Minuit (“Babioles”, “The Christmas Log” – Cartoon d’Or 2014 winner, “Jean-Michel, Super Caribou”, “No-No”, “Peripheria” – Cartoon d’Or 2016 nominee, … ) are selected as Producer of the Year.

And for the first time a Latvian broadcaster is nominated. Latvian Television – LTV (for 2-11 year olds) is a public broadcaster interested in programmes that involve imagination, have educational elements, offer positive behaviour models and yet are entertaining and filled with adventure. Their latest acquisitions are: “Space Racers”, “Woodlies”, “Maya the Bee” & “Yakari”.

The other 2 nominated broadcasters are Sveriges Television – SVT (Sweden) and RTÉ (Ireland).

The German Studio 100 Media (“Maya the Bee”, “Vic the Viking”, “Heidi”, …) complete the nominees to compete for Investor/Distributor of the Year.

Also nominated for Producer of the Year:

  • Belgian company Creative Conspiracy: “Uki”, “OttO’s Tall Tales”, “Three Little Ninjas Delivery Service”, “BaDaBoo” that will be presented this year at Cartoon Forum, …
  • Danish producer Dansk Tegnefilm: “Cirkeline”, “Rita and Crocodile Fishing” – Jury Award for a TV Series in Annecy (2015), “Lili”, …

All professionals attending the Cartoon Forum will vote on site for their favourite nominee in the 3 categories. The award ceremony of the Cartoon Tributes is hosted by the Mairie de Toulouse and Toulouse Métropole.
