FMX 2011 Conference in Stuttgart on Games, Animation, Effects & Interactive Media

Yesterday saw the beginning of FMX 2011, one of the leading conferences for professionals in the animation and video games industries, in Stuttgart, Germany.

Running from the 3-6th May FMX 2011 will host presentations by some of the industries leading figures aimed at providing insight into the latest technology, trends and achievements of the last year.

Focusing on Stereo 3D will be Weta Workshop’s Sebastian Sylwan discussing how they built King Kong 360 3D. The New Zealand based VFX studio have worked on various high profile productions including ‘Lord of the Rings’, and ‘King Kong’ right through to James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’.

Also speaking at FMX 2011 will be Tim Alexander and Patrick Cohen, visual effects and CG supervisors for Industrial Light and Magic (ILM), who worked on ILM’s first ever animated feature, ‘Rango’ which was released earlier this year. Tim and Patrick will explain how they and their team produced the look of ‘Rango’ and how they tried to incorporate live-action techniques into the voice over recording work.

Not only will there also be an exclusive screening of the final chapter of the Harry Potter franchise, ‘Harry Potter and the deathly Hallows: Part II’, but visual effects supervisor for Pixomondo, Rainer Gombos, who has supervised the VFX on films such as ‘The Red Baron’ and ‘2012′, will also be talking about the VFX in their latest films, Zack Snyder’s ‘Sucker Punch’ and ‘Fast Five’ directed by Justin Lin.

The Visual Effects Society (VES) will be hosting a forum on how global production is affecting the VFX industry. Eric Roth will be hosting the discussion which will include points from key players across the gaming, film, television and social media industries.

Amongst other discussions, forums and presentations, FMX 2011, as is traditional, will focus in on a country that has had a particularly successful year in animation. This year, FMX will recognise the achievements of the French and Chinese animation industries, with speakers from both countries running through the developments and successes in their countries industries.

FMX 2011 is run by Filmakadmie Baden-Wuerttemberg and organised by the Institute of Animation, Visual effects and Digital Postproduction. It is hosted at the Haus der Wirtschaft and Gewerkschafthaus throughout the 3-6th May.
