Gelato Go Home by Alasdair & Jock

// Reviews

Summer is a time of warm sunshine, holidays at the beach and most importantly, the traditional ice cream van. With the Summer nearing an end, people returning to work and the dark winter days ahead of us, do we ever stop and think “what happens to all the ice cream vans?”

Trunk directors Alasdair Brotherston & Jock Mooney have answered that question in a short, beautifully animated film about the migrating gelato van for Channel 4’s Random Acts. Inspired by wildlife documentaries & Japanese animation, this mockumentary follows a simple ice cream van heading south for the winter. Although the film has no dialouge, it is fuelled by the simple narrative, clever use of geographical locations (including an ice cream van graveyard!) and a crisp clean art style, with textural eye-candy backgrounds.

Random Acts was set up by Channel 4 is 2011. As well as commissioning established artists and animators, Random Acts also allows smaller, upcoming and emerging talent to be commissioned. Not only has this allowed smaller artists to express themselves and boost creativity, it has also become a hit shepherding  in hundreds of films. Alasdair and Jock began the project after they won a coveted commission from Channel 4’s Random Acts.
