Manchester Animation Festival is over for another year, but 2018’s edition has been the biggest and best yet, bringing a plethora of projects and companies from around the world to the city.

Every year the best minds in the industry gather to judge the best films in the industry and give them a giant bee! This year’s jury included Karin Vandenrydt (ANIMA Festival), Rob Munday (Short of the Week), and Tim Searle (Beano Studios). Without further ado, the award winners are….

INDUSTRY EXCELLENCE AWARDS 2018

The gorgeous Industry Excellence Awards were created by sculptor Beth Jupe at Mackinnon And Saunders.

BEST STUDENT FILM

Travelogue Tel Aviv – by Samuel Patthey
The Jury Said: “Celebrating the energy of an intriguing city through its wonderfully free style”

BEST IMMERSIVE FILM

Back to the Moon – by FX Goby & Helene LeRoux
The Jury Said: “Perfectly uses the technology of VR to transport you into the magical world of Méliès.”

BEST SHORT FILM

Bloeistraat 11 –  by Nienke Deutz
The Jury said: “A genuine portrayal of the confusing age of adolescence, using a strikingly original and subtle style”

SPECIAL MENTIONS

This year, the Jury has such a hard time deciding on a winner of the awards, they wanted to give a:

  • Special Mention for Best Short Film to ‘Egg,’ by Martina Scarpelli. The Jury said, “A powerful film that helps you begin to understand a very complicated condition.”
  • Special Mention for Best Student Film to ‘Somewhere Soft,’ by Satoe Yoshinari. The Jury said it was “A sincere, delicate film exploring the fragility of love with powerful impact.”

MAF 2018 was signed off by Festival Director, Steve Henderson, confirming that the Manchester Animation Festival will be returning for a 2019 edition – dates unannounced as yet.
