October 28th marks International Animation Day, a commemoration of the public debut of Emile Renaud’s Theatre Optique in 1892 (also this humble scribe’s birthday – coincidence? Well…yes). Beginning last October, the NFB have released their recent crop of exceptional animated work through their Get Animated website. Premieres thus far have included Edmond Was A Donkey (Franck Dion), Gloria Victoria (Theo Ushev), Oedipus (Paul Driessen) and My Little Underground (Elise Simard) amongst others, with dedicated spotlights on filmmakers Chris Landreth and Theo Ushev.

For today’s 2014 celebration the Film Board have premiered Landreth’s exceptional short film Subconscious Password:

To find out about the making of the film you can watch our Lightbox special (with the full audio interview featured on episode 15 of the Skwigly Podcast):

Also premiering online is the full crop of films produced under the NFB’s Hothouse scheme, in which six up-and-coming directors were brought on board to create their first film in a professional environment.

You can learn more about the Hothouse process in the specially-made documentary Behind the Abstract Scenes put together by scheme leader Jelena Popovic:
