Five Oscar Worthy VFX Breakdowns

// Featured

It’s that time of the year again where the Academy have chosen to reveal the list of films they have chosen to bless with a prestigious nomination. And as we as a collective internet grumble and moan about which films we were disappointed didn’t get a nod from Ol’ Oscar, let’s take a moment to appreciate those that did get a nod and look at the fantastic work that went behind them. The VFX category this year has been one of the strongest for a while. For many years, the VFX category has been a no-brainer decision with one film always standing out from the crowd. Past winners such as Interstellar, Gravity and Life of Pi all had masterful directors and VFX production houses that helped each film stand out using the subtlety or spectacle of VFX that took the Oscar home.

This year is slightly different. That’s not to say there isn’t a masterful director behind these films, it’s to say there’s too many! Could it go to George Miller’s brilliant blend of practical and visual effects? Or will the amazing visual effects that made Alejandro González Iñárritu’s and Emmanuel Lubezki’s visual masterpiece a possibility impress academy voters for a second year running? Elsewhere, Ridley Scott is a man very familiar with the Best Visual Effects award, with works like Bladerunner, Alien, Gladiator and Prometheus, Scott is no newcomer to the category. Maybe the Academy are feeling a little nostalgic and will go with good old Star Wars? The franchise has already taken 3 of these awards home and ILM practically invented the field with 15 Oscars already under their belt.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the behind the scenes work that make these films possible.
