Popeye CGI – Sony Pictures Begin Work On Film

// News

Popeye, created by E.C. Segar, made his debut in 1929.

Sony Pictures Animation and Arad Productions have set Jay Scherick & David the task to write a feature film based on Popeye.

The pair return to work for Sony following the success of “The Smurfs” which grossed over 550 million dollars worldwide. They have already penned a sequel to follow on from that success.

“Scherick & Ronn have a remarkable talent in re-energizing beloved characters,” says Bob Osher, president of Sony Pictures Digital Productions. “As they demonstrated with The Smurfs, they embrace the iconic characteristics of these timeless characters and craft a story that really engages moviegoers today.”

Popeye first appeared as a one off character in daily newspaper comic strip “Thimble Theatre”, but his popularity quickly made him the main character and focus of the strip. He made his animated debut in a Betty Boop cartoon (though Betty herself only briefly appeared) before starring in his own series, where his love for the gangly Olive Oyl and his spinach powered punch ups with the villainous Bluto would ensure his popularity would continue to this day.
