What is the film about?

A rollicking one minute journey through President Obama’s July 2013 speech, in which he addressed the outrage caused by the trial of George Zimmerman. Zimmerman shot and killed an unarmed black teenager was acquitted of all charges. This film was created with stop-motion marker on glass animation and After Effects.

A little background information...

his film came about because I was given an assignment to make a one minute film for my Master of Animation at AKV St Joost in The Netherlands. Maybe it was being a foreigner again in Europe, but I was thinking a lot about the country I’d just moved from, the US of A. I decided to focus on one of President Obama’s speeches, the one he gave in July 2013 after George Zimmerman’s acquittal (George Zimmerman shot and killed an unarmed black teenager and was acquitted of all charges). I sampled the speech and mixed it up. I wanted to capture what I felt was the essence of Obama’s speech, which was explaining to white people why black people were upset about the verdict. In other words, what better topic for a one minute short than race in America?

How was the film made?

The film was animated one frame at a time with a marker-on-glass technique and then composited in After Effects.
