The 40th Annie Awards Winners

// News

The 40th Annie awards hosted at the UCLA’s Royce Hall in Los Angeles saw the best the industry had to offer unite in a spectacular display of talent.

Disney’s ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ won Best Animated Feature, as well as four other awards. It was an impressive night for Disney studios with “Paperman”-released online earlier this month- winning Best Animated Short award. With the Oscars coming up soon, it looks like it will be a sterling year for Disney productions.

Laika studio’s Travis Knight won the Best Character Animation in a Feature Production Award and Heidi Smith winning the Character Design in an Animated Feature Production Award for their work on ‘Paranorman’, leaving stop-motion far from empty handed.

However it was New York based animator Timothy Reckart, who won the Student film categories with his N.F.T.S produced animated short “Head Over Heels” that really stood out for us at Skwigly.

The stunning film won over the panel with its brilliant visuals and captivating narrative, the short stop-motion portrays how an elderly couple growing apart, learn to work together after years of marriage. This prestigious award can be added to an already heaving trophy shelf for Timothy Reckart. With this films long list of achievements growing ever longer, is an Oscar around the corner?

Also this year, there were three winners for the prestigious Winsor McCay Award – which is given to professionals in recognition of a lifetime of contribution to the art of animation. Oscar Grillo, Terry Gilliam and Mark Henn all received the award for their extensive efforts in the animation and film making industry.

This year Annie Awards really highlight 2012 as a great year for animation. Lets hope with movies such as Pixar’s Monster’s University and Dreamworks The Croods set to be released later this year, that 2013 brings continuing success to the animation community.
