Trailer for ‘Anomalisa’ arrives

// News

A trailer for the new Charlie Kaufman film has hit the web to be met with critical acclaim and even mutterings of a best picture nomination. Whilst Skwigly wouldn’t normally pay heed to such releases Anomalisa appears to owe at least part of its charm to its use of stop motion which puts it directly on our radar.

Directors Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson have made the film with Starburns Industries‘ Dan Harmon (Community, Rick and Morty) exec producing. The film tells the tale of Michael Stone, a motivational speaker crippled by the mundanity of life. The film stars David Thewlis, Jennifer Jason Lee and Tom Noonan.

The trailer itself appears to show none of the limitations of stop motion, the numerous sets and characters on display are not characteristic of a film of this nature, perhaps leaving one to question why this film has been made using this method. If you have a limitless medium like animation why make a film like this in this way? The film does however showcase its method without embarrassment, boldly displaying the puppets for what they are, leaving the replacement masks the puppets use visible for all to see. The film originated on Kickstarter campaigning to raise funds for a 40 minute short, however as pledgers doubled the $200,000 target the films scope appears to have risen with it whilst still avoiding any big studio interference the campaign sought to avoid in the first place.

The film will be released in the UK next year.
