What Age Is Your Animated Film For? Animation HUB Introduces the Young Audience Rating System
Animation is often labelled “for children” without asking which children. Animation HUB’s new practical tool, developed in collaboration with media psychologist Martina Peštaj, aims to change that.
Animation HUB, a new platform under the CEE Animation umbrella, has launched the Young Audience Rating System (YARS), a practical classification tool and growing collection of online resources designed to deepen the understanding of young animation audiences through the lens of developmental psychology. The aim of YARS is to provide creators, distributors, festivals, educators, and other professionals with practical guidance for understanding how children and adolescents experience animated content at different stages of development.
YARS connects the developmental characteristics of different age groups, from toddlers to late adolescents, with the elements that shape an animated film: story, characters, emotions, visual language, humour, and themes. Rather than functioning as a restrictive classification system, YARS encourages a deeper awareness of how these elements relate to the developmental needs and experiences of young audiences.
To develop YARS, CEE Animation collaborated with media psychologist Martina Peštaj as part of the Animation HUB project. The system aims to help animation professionals consider not only what a film is about, but also how its creative elements may be experienced by viewers at different stages of development.
If we want to inspire children and adolescents to appreciate high-quality animated films, we need to offer them content that feels close to their own lives, characters they can relate to, and forms that engage them. The themes most engaging for them are those that resonate with their current developmental stage.

The YARS toolkit is a free online resource for animation professionals. It includes a Practical Guide for Young Animation Audiences, as well as downloadable labels, all available on the official website. The toolkit is complemented by additional resources, including an interview and the CEE Animation Experience webinar with Martina Peštaj.
CEE Animation believes that animation for children and young audiences deserves thoughtful, responsible, and age-sensitive approaches that respect viewers’ emotional, cognitive, and social development. YARS is intended to support this approach by giving professionals a practical framework for thinking about young audiences throughout the creative and distribution process.
