Animation Supplies today announced the launch of Chroma Clay, a brand‑new plasticine formulated specifically for stop‑motion animation. Developed in response to the closure of the Newplast factory, which left animators and studios scrambling for alternatives, Chroma Clay is now proudly made in the UK and designed to meet the exacting demands of professional animators.

When The Telegraph published an article claiming that Aardman Animations risked running out of plasticine, the stop‑motion community faced a real creative challenge. Having supplied Newplast to the animation industry for over a decade, Animation Supplies recognised the urgent need for a reliable, high‑quality replacement that could deliver the same flexibility, colour range and durability required for filmmaking.

Having supplied the animation industry with Newplast for as long as I can remember, we were shocked and saddened by the closure of their factory. Having tested all the other options available and finding that none were suitable for the demands of stop motion, we set about developing our own product. It’s been a labour of love for the last couple of years, but the effort has paid off and we are extremely pleased with the result.

After extensive testing with professional animators and studios, Chroma Clay has been formulated to maintain smooth, consistent performance. It is soft enough to sculpt fine detail, yet firm enough to hold its shape during lengthy shoots. Unlike Newplast, Chroma Clay is wax‑based, which means it can be melted, making it easy to mix colours and ideal for use with moulds.

Chroma Clay has re-established plasticine manufacture in the UK, which is something Animation Supplies is proud to be able to do.
