Netflix reveals details of upcoming adult animation slate at Annecy 2021

// News

Yesterday evening saw the first looks at three exciting new adult animation projects from Netflix, unveiled during a special presentation at this year’s Annecy festival.

No two Netflix adult animated shows are the same and that’s how we like it. From comedy mainstays like Big Mouth and F Is for Family, to uncharted storytelling experiences like The Midnight Gospel – there’s something for everyone. And we’re excited to expand our slate and push the boundaries of what’s possible in adult animation.

In addition to working with some of the best production studios in the world, we’ve also built our own state-of-the-art adult animation studio in Los Angeles. It’s here where the greatest creative minds in adult animation come together to make industry-defining content, reflective of the diversity in cast, crew, tone and format we strive for in all of our series and films.

The House

The House is produced by Nexus Studios (This Way Up, Back to The Moon) and boasts the talents of four of stop-motion’s most acclaimed artists across three stories that promise to be imaginative, witty and captivating.

We’re introducing our first-stop motion anthology, The House, at the same place where it first began – the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. An eccentric dark comedy directed by the leading voices in independent stop motion animation – Emma de Swaef and Marc Roels, Niki Lindroth von Bahr and Paloma Baeza – the anthology centers on a house and the three surreal tales of the individuals who made it their home.

Chapter One (Emma de Swaef & Marc James Roels), includes Claudie Blakley, Matthew Goode, Mia Goth, Mark Heap, Miranda Richardson, Josh McGuire and Stephanie Cole among its voice cast; Niki Lindroth von Bahr’s Chapter Two features the musicians Jarvis Cocker and Dizzee Rascal alongside Yvonne Lombard and Sven Wollter; Chapter Three, helmed by Paloma Baeza, will star Helena Bonham-Carter, Paul Kaye and Will Sharpe.

Inside Job (Image via Netflix)

Inside Job

Creator Shion Takeuchi and executive producer Alex Hirsch, both of the Gravity Falls fame, presented an overview of their new project Inside Job along with a sneak peek centered around disgraced conspiracy theorist Rand Ridley (voiced by Christian Slater). The show marks the first adult animation series to be created in-house by the newly-formed Netflix Animation Studios in LA.

Inside Job is an adult animated comedy about the shadow government – and the dysfunctional team whose daily grind is committing the world’s conspiracies. From convoluted coverups to secret societies to masked orgy etiquette, navigating office culture at Cognito Inc. can be tricky, especially for anti-social tech genius Reagan Ridley. Even in a workplace filled with reptilian shapeshifters and psychic mushrooms, she’s seen as the odd one out for believing the world could be a better place. Reagan thinks she can make a difference, if only she could manage her unhinged, manifesto-writing father and her irresponsible coworkers, to finally snag the promotion she’s been dreaming about.

Other members of the voice cast include Lizzy Caplan in the lead role of Reagan Ridley, Cognito Inc.’s antisocial tech genius and daughter of Rand; Clark Duke as Brett Hand, a lovable D.C. yes-dude; Andrew Daly as Cognito CEO J.R. Scheimpough, CEO of Cognito; Bobby Lee as Dr. Andre, a free-spirited biochemist; John DiMaggio as Glenn Dolphman, a half-man, half-dolphin; Tisha Campbell as Gigi, Cognito’s fast-talking Head of Media Manipulation and Subliminal Messages; and Brett Gelman as Magic Myc, a psychic subterranean mushroom creature from a hive mind deep within Hollow Earth.

Human Resources (Image via Netflix)

Human Resources

Spun-off from the successful series Big Mouth and from the same creative team, Human Resources will feature Nick Kroll, Maya Rudolph and David Thewlis resuming their roles as Maury the Hormone Monster, Connie the Hormone Monstress and The Shame Wizard respectively, joined by Aidy Bryant, Brandon Kyle Goodman, Keke Palmer, and Randall Park voicing new characters.

From the inventive minds behind Big Mouth comes the even edgier and adult-ier Human Resources. The spinoff pulls back the curtain on the daily lives of the creatures – Hormone Monsters, Depression Kitties, Shame Wizards and many more – that help humans journey through every aspect of life from puberty to childbirth to the twilight years. It quickly becomes clear that though the creatures are the protagonists, they have a lot of humanity themselves. The series is co-created and executive produced by Kelly Galuska, Nick Kroll, Andrew Goldberg, Jennifer Flackett and Mark Levin. Human Resources is produced by Brutus Pink and Titmouse, Inc.
