Quirino Awards Receive 247 Animation Works From 15 Countries Submitted For 7th Edition

A total of 247 works from 15 countries have been submitted for the seventh edition of the Ibero-American Animation Quirino Awards, which once again this year have the main sponsorship of the Cabildo de Tenerife. Created in 2018 with the aim of recognizing the best of Ibero-American animation, the awards will be presented on May 11 at a gala in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, on the island of Tenerife. With a 10.7% increase on the number of submissions compared to last year, the Quirino Awards total 1,729 works submitted in its seven editions.

The works submitted seek to be finalists in the seven main award categories: Feature Film, Series, Short Film, School Short Film, Commissioned Work, Video Game Animation, and this year for the first time, Music Video. Awards will also be given to the best works in three technical categories: Visual Development, Animation Design, and Sound Design and Original Music.

The call was open to animation works from the 23 countries that make up the Ibero-American region and 15 feature films, 37 series, 98 short films, 33 school short films, 37 commissioned works, 10 video games and 17 music videos were submitted, totaling 51 hours of animation. Spain leads the list of submissions (29%), followed by Brazil (15%), Argentina (12%), Mexico (10%), Portugal (8%), Chile (7%), and Colombia (6%). Works were also received from Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

From all the submitted works, the Selection Committee—made up of Katarzyna Gromadzka, Barry O’Donoghue, Loïc Portier, Carlos Roca, Paco Rodríguez and Sydney Padua—will choose six works per category, which will be announced on February 8. A month later, three finalists per category will be announced, selected by an International Jury made up of directors José Miguel Ribeiro (Portugal), Marcela Rincón (Colombia) and Wesley Louis (England), Zane Valeniece (Head of Acquisitions at Latvian Public Television [LTV]) and Emmanuèle Petry (Co-founder, Producer and Head of International Sales for the French production and distribution company Dandelooo).

Portuguese animation was the star of the latest edition of the Quirino Awards, winning four of the nine main awards, including Best Feature Film (“Nayola” by José Miguel Ribeiro) and Best Short Film (“O Homem do Lixo” by Laura Gonçalves). The award for Best Series went to the Spanish film “Jasmine & Jambo” by Silvia Cortés.

 

The Co-Production Forum Is Now Open for Registration

San Cristóbal de La Laguna will also host the Co-Production and Business Forum, the industry wing of the Quirino Awards created to promote the co-production, development and distribution of Ibero-American animation works and projects. A total of 148 companies from 26 countries participated in the last edition of this forum for professionals, where 1,247 B2B meetings were held.

Those interested in participating must complete the form available on the Quirino Awards website before March 12 at 23:59 Mexico City time. Once confirmation of the spot has been received, participants must pay a registration fee of 200 euros, which includes the arrangement of a personalized agenda of meetings, in addition to meals. In addition to professional meetings, the Forum offers various activities aimed at fostering networking and supporting the international distribution of animation content, including a meeting of public televisions from Ibero-America. This will be the third consecutive year in which representatives of public channels from Latin America, Spain and Portugal will meet during the Quirino Awards to explore potential partnerships and cooperation strategies.
