What is the film about?

Escape velocity: the minimum speed needed for an object to escape from the gravitational influence of a massive body, without ever falling back.

Animated short about an astronaut, who must reach his space shuttle before a mysterious beast catches him. He has been chased by this creature for a long time, and the only way to break free is to escape this curious planet. Will he succeed to leave this chaotic world behind? Will he escape? The title is a technical term related to space travel for good reason. It also symbolizes a final determination, which is a hard step to take. Allegorical story of letting go, with a little twist at the end.

What influenced it?

My main inspiration for creating the atmosphere of the film was old sci-fi book covers of 80’s, and the comics of Moebius. Fantastic planet and The Masters of time (and all the works of René Laloux) also had a huge impact on me, hope this can be felt in the film.

A little background information...

This short film is very important to me: it is the largest and most difficult challenge I managed to tackle unto this day and it made me learn a lot. I named the movie “Escape Velocity”, a technical term related to space travel for good reason. It also symbolizes a final determination, which is a hard step to take. The idea itself came from a breakup, which left a deep impression on me, and inevitably it also became the topic of the film – an inflamed relationship, a long persecution. Later on the story changed a lot of course: I tried to make the personal energies more universal. This is how the result became an allegoric story of letting go embedded in a sci-fi context, which, I hope, many people can relate to

How was the film made?

The film was made with my university classmates using traditional 2d computer animation techniques. (TVPaint, Adobe After effects)
