A little background information...
The story grew out of my own experience of wrestling with indecision about motherhood. As the uncertainty began to weigh heavily on my mental health, I turned to art to understand my situation, to process it, and to lighten the load.
It mattered to me that Make a Wish was a comedy: something absurd and optimistic, especially while tackling this rarely addressed subject. There are many stories about motherhood, and some small but vital spaces for childfree and childless communities. But the “in-between” space, where someone can’t decide, yet feels the pressure of time, health, or society, is rarely represented. It can be a very lonely place, and that’s the space I wanted to give voice to.
How was the film made?
Justyna Green has produced, directed, written, edited the film, and also voiced both Womb and Poo, with James Green voicing Sausage. Visually, the film combines handmade miniature sets with hybrid characters: Womb as a 2D animation, Sausage as a stop-motion vegetarian sausage, and the Genie sculpted from clay.
Though the Genie’s appearance is outrageous, even gross, the encounter offers Womb a profound moment of clarity, and a glimpse at the many ways of living a full life, with or without motherhood.
