What is the film about?

The woman and the man are in a room, a gecko sits in a terrarium, several flies are circling a lamp. Gradually we find more and more dependencies and analogies between their activities and observed elements as the rhythm of their universes accelerates. The microcosms shown seem to interact rhythmically and belong to some cosmic order.

A little background information...

Marta Magnuska’s picture is a study of a relationship between two characters sharing living space with each other.

The Idea for a film was loosely inspired by Italo Calvino’s short story in which a couple follows everyday ritual of sitting by the window and observing gecko hunting flies. My story focuses on relationship between woman and man and the gecko becomes catalyst for the events, silent ally of a woman trying to reconnect with her partner. This animation is a journey that started with a single line. Every frame is a part of me.

I took interest in an idea of finding parallel between observed microworlds and various layers of our reality. It’s as if our everyday routine was a part of a particular greater mechanism – explains, adding that she wandered off from traditional narrative to reflect growing tension between characters, using only expression of coal drawings created frame by frame, editing and sound layer.

How was the film made?

Development of the film took three years with significant support of animation company Animoon (producent) and Atom Art (coproducer).

It’s an arthouse film so we tried to make it as easy as possible for Marta to help her artistic vision come true. We wanted the cooperation not to be based on purely production-organization aspects of turning vision into film. We offered our experience to make Marta feel confident about her artistic choices. Marta proved that unlimited passion and talent can replace great teams. We are proud to have been able to help this spark develop into flame. We hope our campaign is going to grab attention of Academy members, and turn it to this incredible touching and intimate story that manages to stay relatable – they emphasize, referring to ongoing “For Your Consideration” campaign.

It’s a campaign directed at Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences members whose votes can ensure the film receives a spot on Oscar short list and – furthermore – esteemed Oscar nomination. Campaign is funded by Polish Film Institute. While it’s ongoing, you can see the film on www.misalignedshort.com.

“Misaligned” was created thanks to the support of Polish Film Institute and Latvian Film Centre.
