What is the film about?

Noah has not accepted the death of his mother, an astronaut. In order to move on, he must break that which still connects them.

What influenced it?

I really loved the old animation ‘The Sandman’ which influenced the puppet and aesthetic, with sharp edges and a somewhat creepy feel. While developing the oil paint sections I looked at artists like Caroline Leaf and Michaela Müller, although I tried mostly to just work with the paint and allowed the style to develop naturally from my love of cubism.

A little background information...

This was my graduation film from the National Film and Television School. Thematically, it arose from a visual image that my writer, Jessica Sinyard, found of a space suit that looked like it was attached via an umbilical cord. This idea of grieving for someone without a body on Earth became a fascination, and the aim was to explore how someone might move on from (and create their own grieving process) for an event such as this. I wanted to make a film that was mostly non-verbal, expressing strong emotions through the language of the body.

How was the film made?

It was made over the course of 16 months. This included two set builds and around 6 months of animation, including the oil paint section that was animated in one long section.
