Špela Čadež’s ‘Steakhouse’ & Sander Joon’s ‘Sierra’ Among Winners at Finland’s 7th Turku Animated Film Festival

Nine films in 10 different categories were awarded at the Turku Animated Film Festival. Although the styles, techniques and atmospheres of the winning films differ, almost all of the films touching our juries hearts reflect the tensions within families.

TAFF’s Grand Prix was awarded to Špela Čadež‘s Steakhouse, which managed to convey the atmosphere of a home in crisis with its smoke and fog veiled story.

The title of the Best Professional Film as well as the Audience’s Choice was won by Sander Joon‘s Sierra, whose lively and colorful story about a father-son relationship charmed the audience and the jury. The prize for the best student film was awarded to Gabrielle SelnetAdam Sillard and Chloé Farr‘s Goodbye Jérôme!, where a breakup story is dressed in a colorful psychedelic aesthetic.

The award for the Best National Film was awarded to Iiti Yli-Harja‘s All My Mom’s Phone Calls, which the jury praised for its strong and realistic portrayal of a mother in her kitchen. The TAFF Junior Award was won by Uri Lotan‘s Black Slide, a film bursting with repressed emotions, that reminds us that children see and hear more than adults would let themselves believe.

The international jury of TAFF 2022 included Renata GąsiorowskaJulian Gallese and Daniel Šuljić. The National awards were selected by Hanneriina MoisseinenLucija Mrzljak and Tomi Riionheimo. Luolavuori school’s 8th graders served as sharp-eyed judges in the TAFF Junior Competition.

The Grand Prix, worth 1,500 euros, was sponsored by YLE. The prize for the National Competition was donated by Finnish Animation Guild.
