The Eleven Finalist Projects Of The Next Lab International Workshop Are Revealed

// Hot off the Press

This week ends the first phase of the Next Lab workshop, in which 20 animation projects from different origins and formats have delved into the use of tools belonging to the virtual environment, to optimize both creative and productive processes.

After six weeks of learning the tools, working on the project, tutorials and masterclasses with experts, we already know the projects that will be part of the second phase of the workshop, which will be held in person in Madrid from February 21st to 26th.

Due to the high quality of the projects and the work carried out during the workshop, there will finally be eleven participants in the second phase as finalists. The selection is made up of four series, four short films and three feature films from five different nationalities (Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Portugal and Israel), including a co-production.

Among those selected as finalists we find four series, all projects by Spanish authorship: Cretácico 96 by Rafael Carmona; Onion & Pea by David Tomaselli and Jose M. Villena; Plock by Javier Bernardino; and to finish Animal Drone League by Christian Garnez, winner of the DeAPlaneta Entertainment Award.

Four short film projects will also exhibit their work, in a selection with greater diversity among the origins of the participants: 40 Days Without the Sun by João Furia (Brazil); Buscando a Ana by Inés Vecilla (Spain); Lumen by Enric Sant (Spain); and The Elephant I Found Under My Skin by Shaool Levy and Daniel Sweed (Israel).

Three feature film projects complete the selection of finalists for this second edition: Draw by Lorenzo Degl ́Innocenti and Xosé Zapata (Spain, Portugal. Workshop participants: Nacho Laya and Lorenzo Degl ́Innocenti); Oviblion by Claudia Ruiz (Argentina. Workshop participant: Ana Inés Flores); and Viaje al Bosque Olvidado by Noelia Mª Muíño González (Spain).

On Saturday, February 26th, the finalists will show the teaser of their projects, result of having worked exclusively with Quill and Unreal software in recent weeks. The jury, made up of professionals Arnaud Miquel, Carmen Córdoba, Manuel González, Nick Ladd and Úrsula García, will decide the 2 winning projects that will be presented in the Next Lab space at Annecy 2022.

Accreditations to attend the event on February 25th and 26th are available until February 17th at 11:59 p.m. Two days of conferences, projects pitches and networking activities in which, among others, Nick Ladd, Canadian VR artist and animator and founding member of the Virtual Animation community, will talk about his latest works such as the short film “Namoo” and ” Tales from Soda Island”, a series made entirely in Quill; Marcos Fajardo, creator of Arnold software, Oscar Award and Emmy Award for Engineering; and Rubén Fernández and Joaquín Martínez, participants in Next Lab 2021, who will talk about their experiences, their projects and how their way of working has changed.

Next Lab 2022 has the main sponsorship of the Community of Madrid, through the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Sports; the sponsorship of Creative Europe MEDIA, DeAPlaneta Entertainment and the General Directorate of Cultural Industries, Intellectual Property and Cooperation of the Ministry of Culture and Sports; the collaboration of Enisa, Annecy Festival, ICAA and Weird Market; and the support of Tangram Solutions, Welaw, Pixel Cluster Madrid, Clan VR, Real o Virtual and Mr.Cohl.
