Viborg Animation Festival (VAF) is the biggest animation festival in Denmark. The film program is one of the four tracks of the festival and covers everything from experimental short film, commissioned work, and family features. All in all, VAF presents seven film categories that is all in eligible for the VAF award and prizes. Deadline is April 3rd 2022

VAF seeks to showcase the broad spectrum of animation in the film competition program. The curation is driven by the desire to share experiences with the audience and focus on strong storytelling and solid animation craftmanship. The film program is closely related to the VAF Industry track that brings in animation professionals, artists and filmmakers thoroughly explore the medium.

2022 is the year VAF presents a new award – VAF BEST COMMISSIONED AWARD. The award is a collaboration between VAF and Viborg Visuals, a national hub for animation and visual storytelling founded by Business Viborg, VIA University College and Viborg Municipalities.

VAF takes place physically in Viborg, Denmark from September 26th to October 2nd 2022.

Submissions are open to the following animation categories.

VAF Best Animated feature – all internationally produced animation films of any genre. The length of the films is minimum 40 minutes including credits.

VAF Best Short Animated Film – all internationally produced films of any genre or style. The length of the films must not exceed 17 minutes including credits.

VAF Best Student Film – all internationally student animated films from art and animation schools. Mix techniques, including live action, accepted. The length of the films must not exceed 17 minutes including credits.

ANIMOK Youth Jury Award – he short films in this competition are aimed at young people aged 12-14. The award is giving to a short film selected by a group of young kids age 12-13 years old.

VAF Best Experimental film –  all internationally produced animation films which relates experimentally to animation, both in technique and in storytelling. The length of the films must not exceed 17 minutes including credits.

Open Workshop Danish Talent Award – all Danish produced animation films of any genre or style. The production must be a result of talent development. The length of the films must not exceed 30 minutes including credits.

VAF Best Commissioned Award – The length of the films must not exceed 17 minutes including credits. Open to internationally produced work that is the result of a commissioned assignment

VAF believes that animation craft and artists should be celebrated, cultivated, and communicated. The festival offers animation-related film programs, cultural events, and professional conferences through the four tracks: FILM, ANIMOK, CULTURE, and INDUSTRY. The events are for the broader public, people in the animation industry, as well as potential consumers of animated content.

VAF takes place in Viborg, Denmark from September 26th to October 2nd 2022.
