The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences first recognised the potential of animated features at the 11th Academy Awards in 1939, when Walt Disney received an Honorary Oscar for his seminal motion picture Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. In subsequent years, other animated features were occasionally honoured with Special Achievement awards, until the category of Best Animated Feature was finally introduced in 2002, at the 74th Academy Awards, when producer Aron Warner received the iconic gold statuette for DreamWorks Pictures’Shrek.

An international community of over 9,000 artists, filmmakers and executives, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was founded in 1927, with Douglas Fairbanks as its first president. The 93rd Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 25, 2021, five days before the official opening of the new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles.

The 2021 PreVIEW season will deliver a range of inspiring events every month through to the official launch of VIEW Conference on October 17.

The annual awards season always encourages lively discussion, and this year is no exception. It is such an honour for VIEW Conference to host this conversation between twelve of our leading filmmakers. Their contribution to the art and craft of animated features is immeasurable, and I cannot wait to hear their thoughts about this year’s Oscar race.

Conference Director Dr. Maria Elena Gutierrez
