2022 BAFTA Nominations Announced

// News

The 2022 EE British Academy Film Awards nominations have been announced! The awards, that celebrate the national and international film industry, The EE BAFTAs will take place on Sunday 13 March will be broadcast on the BBC in the UK.

In 2021 Soul took home the award for Animated Film (as well as original score) whilst the British Short Animation went to Mole Hill for his short film The Owl and the Pussycat. The award for Special Visual Effects went to mind bending adventure-drama Tenet.

There’s an even spread this year across the studios as opposed to previous years where Pixar have had double nominations. Encanto from Disney and Luca from sister studio Pixar take their usual place in the lineup but both The Mitchell’s vs The Machines fans will be delighted to see Sony Pictures Animation nominated with Jonas Pohur Rassmusens’ Flee completing the lineup.

Whilst it is not unusual for animated features occasionally find their way into the category for original score, Flee bucks the trend by making it’s way into the Documentary category. The film is also thought to be the first to be made eligible for the Animated Feature, Documentary Feature, and International Feature Film categories at the forthcoming Academy Awards (Oscars). Will this pave the way for animated features to make their way into the coveted and live action dominated Best Film or Outstanding British Film categories in future years? We shall see.

The National Film and Television School once more dominate the British Short Animation category with two out of the three nominations with Jordi Morera’s Do Not Feed the Pigeons and Ida Melum’s Night of the Living Dread lining up alongside Joanna Quinn and Les Mills’ Affairs of the Art from Beryl productions and the NFB.
