British Animation Awards 2020 Winners

// News

Last night saw the biennial British Animation Awards take place at London’s BFI Southbank, in celebration of all that is great about the British animation industry.

Now in their 24th year, this edition of the awards was notable as Helen Brunsdon’s first since taking the reins over from Jayne Pilling in 2018. The past two years have seen an overhaul of the BAAs, with a new website, the introduction of the Lamb Award, an archive celebrating previous prize artwork, and a new team working behind the scenes.

The ceremony was hosted by comedian and actor Miles Jupp, who was in fine form as he led the celebrations as the industry came together to reward the work of both new and established animators across all aspects of the UK Animation scene.

As with previous years, the awards themselves were unique artworks (featuring sheep) created by a range of leading international and UK animation artists.

Speaking on the event, BAA Director Helen Brunsdon said:

This is my first year at the helm of the BAAs and I was blown away by the quality of the entries this year.  The BAAs are a brilliant way to showcase the incredible talent we have here in the UK and help cement Britain’s position as one of the leading countries in the world for animation.

There were two Public Choice Awards – for Favourite Short Film and Favourite Music Video, which were voted for by audiences at screenings held across the UK in early 2020.  The winners were Maryam Mohajer for her short film Grandad Was a Romantic and Alasdair Brotherston and Jock Mooney for their music video The Beatles – Glass Onion.

The brand new Lamb Award,  which bridges the gap between current student and general best-in-class awards and recognises rising stars in the industry was presented to Roxy Linklater for rigger and armatures at Aardman Animations.
