Oscars 2021: Animation Wins for Pixar’s ‘Soul’ and Netflix’s ‘If Anything Happens I Love You’

The 93rd Academy Awards have announced their winners with Pixar’s Soul (Pete Docter, Dana Murray) taking the award for Animated Feature and Netflix’s If Anything Happens I Love You (Will McCormack, Michael Govier) being awarded for Best Animated Short.

Animated Feature winner Soul beat off competition from Onward, Over the Moon, Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon, and Wolfwalkers, with Pixar picking up their 11th Animated Feature Oscar; following last year’s win with Toy Story 4. Soul also went on to pick up the award for Best Music Original Score (Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Jon Batiste). In his acceptance speech, co-director Pete Docter described Soul as “a love letter to jazz.”

This year’s Animated Short Film winning film was Netflix’s If Anything Happens I Love You, which beat of competition from Pixar’s Burrow (Madeline Sharafian, Michael Capbarat), Genius Loci (Adrien Mérigeau, Amaury Ovise), Opera (Erick Oh), and Yes-People (Gísli Darri Halldórsson, Arnar Gunnarsson).

If Anything Happens, I Love You is a short about two grieving parents. The directors, Will McCormack and Michael Govier, dedicated the win to anyone who has lost a loved one to gun violence. The film is available to watch on Netflix.

Meanwhile, in this year’s poll, Skwigly readers correctly predicted a win for If Anything Happens I Love You (62%), although they were hoping for a different result for Animated Feature, with 65% opting for Wolfwalkers.
