What is the film about?

In a harsh dystopian world, a labor robot working on a mine one day finds something he has never seen – a soft, yet vulnerable dandelion. Something is gradually changing in his hollow heart…

An award-winning short 3d animation about hope, freedom, humanity, exploration, and self-discovery, tells a robot’s journey through the intersection of technology and nature, and reveals his final decision following his heart and will.

What influenced it?

Since its release in 2023, Dandelion has had a meaningful impact within the global animation and film community. The film has been officially selected by over 40 international film festivals, including prestigious platforms such as SIGGRAPH, SIGGRAPH Asia, and Ars Electronica. It has received multiple awards, including Best Animation at the DaVinci International Film Festival and Audience Choice Awards in both Europe and the United States.

More importantly, the film has connected with a wide range of audiences. Some see it as a poetic allegory about freedom and resistance, while others interpret it through the lens of nature, technology, or human idealism. Viewers from different cultures have reached out to us, sharing how the film made them reflect on personal struggles, societal expectations, and the courage to break free from constraints. This response confirmed for us that animation can transcend language—it can speak directly to the human condition.

A little background information...

The idea for Dandelion came from our shared experience as international artists living and working in Florida. While spending long nights developing the project in front of our screens, we also often walked along the coastline, where we felt the contrast between digital intensity and natural serenity. This duality—the mechanical and the organic—became a core metaphor in the story.

We wanted to explore the tension between ideals and reality, between personal dreams and social pressure. The robot in the film represents rational control and conformity, while the dandelion stands for freedom, innocence, and the pursuit of one’s inner truth. As artists and foreigners adapting to a new culture, we found ourselves constantly navigating those forces. This film was our way of processing those emotions and turning them into something universally meaningful.

How was the film made?

We developed and produced Dandelion as a fully independent animated short during our time at Ringling College of Art and Design. The project began in late 2022 and was completed in May 2023. From the beginning, we aimed to create a visually driven narrative—one that could communicate emotion without relying on dialogue.

Our creative process was intense and deeply collaborative. We spent countless hours designing, animating, lighting, and rendering every scene ourselves. The entire film was built in 3D using industry-standard tools, with a strong emphasis on cinematography, contrast, and symbolic composition. Our goal was to build a world that felt poetic yet grounded, expressive yet restrained.

Most importantly, we wanted the film to remain open to interpretation. Whether it’s seen as a reflection on freedom, a story about nature and technology, or simply a tale of rebellion and hope, we hope Dandelion invites each viewer to find their own meaning in it.
