Independent animation studio Studio Ursa has premiered Catus Magus, an original animated short series created by animator Yaron Farkash.

The hand-drawn fantasy comedy follows a little black cat apprenticed to a gruff old wizard. Assigned a series of magical chores and challenges, the apprentice must navigate mysterious towers, enchanted landscapes and unexpected mishaps, discovering that curiosity, perseverance and a little luck can go a long way.

Blending cozy fantasy with lighthearted comedy, Catus Magus aims to deliver short, family-friendly stories filled with imagination, humour and heart. The first season consists of eight episodes, released weekly online, with four episodes currently available to watch.

Created and directed by Farkash, the series serves as both a personal creative outlet and a tribute to the cartoons that inspired him.

Catus Magus is that outlet. It is a playground for my artistic sensibilities and a space where I can invite other talented artists and peers of mine to join me in imagination and creation,” says Farkash. “This is also my love letter to all the cartoons that I enjoy and find inspiring, and an attempt to bridge the gap between my experience as a professional artist and the kid in me.

Produced by Studio Ursa as part of its growing slate of original animated projects, the series combines classic cartoon storytelling with a modern independent production approach. The studio describes the project as a labour of love and a flagship title within its animated short series programme.

Animated in a hand-drawn 2D style, Catus Magus comprises eight episodes of approximately one to two minutes each, following the apprentice cat’s adventures as they tackle magical problems, explore fantastical locations and attempt to earn the occasional smile from their stern mentor.

The series is available now via Studio Ursa’s YouTube channel, with new episodes continuing to roll out weekly.
