The Summer of Animation: A Diversity Based Initiative to Encourage UK Teengers to Make a 3D Animated Film This Summer

Building on last years ACCESS:VFX Animation Summer School held at Escape Studios in London, the ambition for 2020’s “Summer of Animation” is to not just target the younger generation, but to communicate to families, parents, carers and guardians, across the whole of the UK and convince the “grown-ups” that the creative industry is thriving and there are viable career paths their children can channel their creative leanings towards.

As the world is changing and we find ourselves at home, the virtual nature of this free-to-access programme, utilising free-to-download software, means a wider reach in terms of diversity and inclusion, both regionally and socio-economically.

Teenagers from across the UK will discover how to make their own film via:

  • A series of weekly video tutorials showing how to make your own short animated film using free software, created by artists at studios including Blue Zoo, DNEG, The Mill, ILM and Framestore
  • Receiving feedback on your work from experienced artists
  • The option to apply to join the 3DAmi Summer Camp to make an animated film as part of a virtual team
  • A UK-wide competition for the best film, judged by industry professionals with prizes given by animation & VFX studios.

We are encouraging everyone in the industry to raise awareness of the “Summer of Animation” with families they know, to engage the widest audience of young creatives as possible.

The initiative is a collaboration between ACCESS:VFX and its members, ScreenSkills and 3DAmi, with financial support from ACCESS:VFX, the ScreenSkills Animation Skills Fund and the ScreenSkills Mentoring using National Lottery funds awarded by the BFI as part of the Future Film Skills programme.
