Weird Market reveals first details and poster for 13th edition

Weird Market, International Animation, Videogame and New Media Market and 3D Wire Fest, International Animation Festival, have revealed the first details of its 13th edition; the market has unveiled its official poster made by the Spanish illustrator Pakoto. At the same time, it is already known that the multi-award-winning filmmaker Pablo Berger will be one of the prominent names of the 2021 edition and will be the protagonist of the talk: “Robot Dreams by Pablo Berger. From the real image to the animation”. The appointment will be held in Segovia, from September 24th to October 3rd, 2021, with the professional part being on September 30th, October 1st and 2nd, completely in-person, but strictly respecting the Prevention and Control Measures Plan of the Junta de Castilla y León.

The 13th edition of Weird Market will feature a “breakthrough” poster as defined by the director of the event, José Luis Farias. The work created by Pakoto “completely changes the aesthetic that has been working in recent years… but at the same time connects with the most historical part of the city where it is celebrated”. An illustration work with reminiscent of medieval engravings and where you can see iconic elements of the city such as the aqueduct. The composition of the official image is always marked by the reinterpretation of what the feeling of being part of Weird and participating in the event is for the author.

Weird Market 2021 (Pakoto)

Pakoto is an illustrator from Albacete dedicated to the world of animation, specializing in character design and visual development. He has worked for studios such as Screen Novelties (USA), Able and Baker (Spain) and Matte CG (Ecuador), also for Reel FX in films such as the Golden Globe nominee The Book of Life, or recently in the series for Netflix Maya and The Three, both productions by Mexican Jorge Gutiérrez. Among his latest works is the illustration of a story about the life of Guillermo del Toro called Kid del Toro (Editorial Lil Libros).

Pablo Berger and Reventure, first prominent names for Weird Market

Along with the poster of the 13th edition, Weird Market offers some touches of what will be its next edition and one of the prominent names for this 2021 will be the filmmaker Pablo Berger. The director of feature films such as Snow White (winner of 10 Goya Awards), Abracadabra or Torremolinos 73 will be the protagonist of “Robot Dreams by Pablo Berger. From the real image to animation”, a talk where he will fully immerse himself in his next project, his animated film debut. The Basque filmmaker, accompanied by part of the creative team, will analyze the entire production process of this film and the motivations that led him to approach animation in order to tell his story.

For his part, Javi Cepa, founder of the indie studio Pixelatto, will present “Reventure: from the video game to the board game and I just keep going”. The important thing about a good project is the idea and to be able to work in different formats, even change. Reventure started as a video game and as a result of that the developer decided to launch a successful Kickstarter as a board game. In this talk we will understand how are the dynamics and the advantages and disadvantages of both formats.

3D Wire Fest

The reference cultural event for the world of animation, video games and the new media sector will start on September 24th with its cinematographic part: the 3D Wire Fest. From the 24th to the 26th, the screenings of the short films selected in the international competition will take place, while from the 27th to the 29th, other parallel activities will take place.

One of the important dates will be September 30th when the recruitment day (under registration), the networking activities (with invitation) and the screening of the 3D Wire Fest national competition (free until full capacity is reached) will take place.

Regarding the entire conference program, as well as the screening booths and meeting areas, it will focus on October 1st and 2nd. Due to capacity restrictions, places will be very limited. Accreditations will open at the end of August or the beginning of September.

The final touch will be the screening of the winners of the 3D Wire Fest that will take place on Sunday, October 3rd. All the competitive screenings will take place in La Carcel_Segovia Centro de Creación.

A face-to-face appointment under all Prevention and Control Measures

The celebration of the 13th edition of Weird Market and 3D Wire Fest will be completely in-person, but strictly adhering to the Plan of Prevention and Control Measures of the Junta de Castilla y León to face the health crisis caused by COVID-19. All activities will be subject to capacity control, mask using, hand washing and social distancing. In addition, the realization of outdoor activities will be prioritized.

The only activity that will combine the in-person and the online format will be the screening booths. The selection from the catalog of short films, international short films, international music videos and all national works will be available in the screening booths for accredited professionals on October 1st and 2nd; In addition, they will be available on the digital platform Festhome.tv, from September 27th to October 10th, for short films programmers, distributors and buyers.

Imminent closure of the call for projects

The five calls for projects of Weird Market have July 21st as deadline. Proposals structured in various sectors, such as the one for animation and videogame projects that is directed once again to the Portuguese-Spanish sector. In addition, RTVE, Movistar + and the Annecy Festival, maintain their collaboration by granting various recognitions such as the Movistar + Short Film Project Award, RTVE Awards for Best Video Game Project, Most Innovative Video Game Project and Weird Plus Video Game and Annecy-MIFA Award for Best Project of Young Creator Series.

The category of European new media, innovative and transmedia projects continues to be a guide for new trends, as does the international section on animation webseries. Finally, it is worth highlighting the calls for European board game projects and European comic projects that also close this Wednesday, July 21st.
